Legends and myths

The symbol of the poppy contains deep meanings, including the god Morpheus and everything connected with the sleep and the afterlife.
Ancient culture left objects that had a ritual purpose. Findings associated with poppies are found in Greece, Rome, Minor Asia: figurines, ornaments, remnants of poppy seeds on the walls of ancient jugs. The clay statuette “poppy goddess”, found in Crete during excavations is especially interesting. The figure of a woman whose hair is decorated with a crown of long stems with tops. Archaeological analysis shows that the “Mecona Goddess” is about 1300 BC.
Another prototype of Demeter, the poppy goddess, is Mother Earth from Ukrainian pagan legends: “One day the soldiers of the settlement went on a campaign, and the nomads surrounded the city, looking for beautiful gates, but the women left the town through an underground passage into the field, looking for a shelter in the woods, but the Pechenegs caught them. The captives prayed to the Mother Earth, who protected them: each of the girls turned into a poppy flower as soon as the enemy touched her. The gang, left without armor, was suddenly exhausted by the spell of sleep. In the morning the men came back and saw the enemy detachment in a field covered with red poppies. When the last pecheneg was killed, the enchanted flowers turned into women.”
