Collectible jewel
A copper ring decorated with patina is reproduced from a poppy box using electroforming technique. The top is decorated with a large wreath of a correct shape. The ring does not close around the finger, leaving free space on the fold of the palm side.
Shades of patina emphasize the smallest details of the natural ornament of the top. The flower ring is perfectly combined with the decorations of the poppy collection.
Legends and myths
The symbol of the poppy was widespread in the Cretan-Mycenaean culture. Among the monuments there are often images of poppies: a stone column in the courtyard of the Knossos Palace is topped with a poppy box; Mycenaean “poppy goddess” with poppies in her hair; a ring-seal from the Acropolis in Mycenae, which depicts a goddess receiving as a gift the poppy boxes on the stems. Many Ukrainian folk customs of pagan times are associated with the poppy, which was considered to be a talisman against evil forces. One of the customs is partially preserved by now: during Makoviy holiday people usually gather “Makoviychyky” – bouquets of healing herbs, which must contain poppy boxes with seeds. People mostly collect wormwood, mint, lovage, thyme, and other useful herbs; the herbs are dried and consumed against various diseases, and poppy seeds are sown in the spring. The name “Makoviy” comes from the name of the Old Testament brothers of Maccabees.
Decoration material
In the Stone Age, copper was smelted by mixing malachite ore with coal in a clay pot, which was put into a pit with a strong fire. Nowadays it is extracted from varieties of sulfide ores. Native metal is also found. Copper changes color due to oxidation, being covered with a dark film. The poppy ring, skillfully patinated, has its own unique look.
Poppy ring
According to the Vedic astrological tradition, all five elements are harmoniously intertwined in the poppy ring: the symbol of the poppy brings us earthly and water energy, copper symbolizes the element of fire, the hole for the finger – air and ether.
