Legends and myths

Among the heritage of ancient culture, a statuette of the “goddess of poppies” has reached us, representing Demeter, the goddess Mekon, the patroness of agriculture and crops, whose hair is decorated with poppy heads. The prototype of Demeter in Ukrainian paganism is the goddess Zhiva, the nurse and guardian of the clan; goddess Bhumi in the Vedic tradition. In ancient Ukraine, the poppy was a traditional plant that was considered a talisman against all evil and misfortune, used for divination and conspiracies, love spells and protection from evil spirits. Girls decorated wreaths with flowers and weaved ripe poppies into their hair so that the maiden braid, which symbolizes virginity, and not loosened.
